Should I place my child for adoption?
This decision is a difficult one to make. It is an act of great courage and much love. It will allow you to ensure the safety and well being of
your child, while being able to continue with the dreams and goals you have for your future. It is a very selfless act on your part and depending on the type of adoption you choose, you may still get
to be a part of your child's future.
No one can make the decision for you. It is important to talk about your situation with someone close to you. Make sure you have explored all of your options and possibilities. There may be services
in your area that will make it possible for you to parent your child. You might consider call the local social services office to ask about various assistance programs that are available.
Are There Different Types of Adoption?
There are 3 primary types of adoption; Closed adoption, Open Adoption and Semi-Open Adoption. As a placing mother, you can decide how much, if any, contact you have with the adoptive family before, during, and after the birth and placement.
Open Adoption
Typically the birth mother and the adoptive families have met prior to the birth, and are able to freely communicate by exchanging contact information. The birth mother remains in contact with the family and the child over the years, by visiting, calling, or writing each other.
Closed Adoption
There is no exchange of information and the birth parents and the adoptive parents never know each other. Adoptive parents are given background information about you and the birth father that they would need to help them take care of the child, such as medical information. You can still read all of the family profiles and pick the one best suited for your baby, but you will not meet them.
Semi-Open Adoption
This option is middle of the road. Here, contact information is not exchanged with each other, instead, each party communicates through the placing agency that handled the adoption. Letters, cards, and gifts can be exchanged through the social worker or agency representative.
Can I pick the adoptive family for my child?
We have numerous family profiles that can be reviewed by you. Each family puts together a letter and several pictures. You will be given the profiles that best fit your ideal situation for your
child and you can choose among those.
All of our potential adoptive families are carefully screened and each family must undergo an extensive Home Study which evaluates their stability, financial security, lifestyle, home, health
situation, and personal history. After the child is placed with the adoptive family, that family is monitored for a minimum of three months and up to six months until the finalization of the adoption
takes place.
